Welcome. The good, the bad, and the honest.

Welcome to Lake Effect Speech!

Embarking on an SLP career is an exciting and fulfilling, yet challenging and daunting, journey, offering opportunities to make a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals facing communication, swallowing, and cognitive challenges. If you're considering this path, you're probably in the right place. This blog is meant to provide you with helpful information to decide if this is the right path for you. In addition this website is a resource for new and old clinicians alike to provide you with a wide variety of resources based on my experience. I’ll guide you through the steps to reach these career and life milestones and provide valuable advice for those aspiring to secure a position in the speech, language, and communication field. Or for anyone considering this career path.

If we want to call this a disclaimer than we can but if there is one thing that I am, it’s honest. The speech-language pathology field is filled with great opportunities and excitement. But no career field is perfect and boy does our field have some flaws too. While I can’t address each and every pro and con to our field I do remember going through my master’s program with a limited understanding of what the speech and language field is actually like.

If you’re like me and appreciate transparency this might be the place for you. Sprinkled here and there might also be some free resources to help support you and whatever you decide to make of your journey.

I’ve hit walls of hating this field and made monumental leaps in enjoying this field. For me it’s a love/hate relationship that I’m still trying to find the balance of. The biggest part of this is letting others know that we never have to be full on dedicated to the life of being an SLP (whatever that means) AND we can also appreciate the hard work and beauty of the field at the same time.

So let’s get started. The good. The bad. The honest.
